Recreation in Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Casual Recreation

Site Seeing. Loreto Baja Mexico is a great place for a wide variety of relaxing, casual recreation activities such as siteseeing. The town of Loreto is quaint and compact, easily toured on foot. You can take a tour of the town and visit the famous old mission, Our Lady of Loreto. Or you can take a tour of the nearby ruggedly beautiful Sierra La Giganta Mountains and another nearby beautifully restored Mission of San Javier. Taking a drive in either north or south directions along Highway One and you will see some absolutely gorgeous and majestic coves and bays.  You will see locals and foreign visitors launching their boats into the calm waters of the Sea of Cortez from the many beach campgrounds and fishing camps scattered along the way, just off Highway One. It will make you envious.

Golfing is gaining more and more attention here with the 18 hole professional golf course in Costa Baja. There is a lovely 5 star hotel and club house at the golf course just a few minutes from downtown Loreto.

Sports and Exercise

Sport Fishing

Fishing is one of the two main sport and recreation activities that dominate the Sea of Cortez, Loreto, and the entirety of the Baja Peninsula. There is great fishing all year round. Departing from the new marina makes launching a boat by yourself easy and safe. Many Americans and Canadians have their own boat or you can easily find a boat and skipper to rent for the day. The fishing is absolutely superb for a great variety of game fish and great eating fish, such as Mahi Mahi (Dorado around here), cabrilla, grouper, yellow tail, tuna, sail fish, marlin, and many more. See the page on Offshore Fishing in Loreto.

Diving and Snorkeling

Scuba diving and snorkeling is the other main recreational activity of great prominence in Loreto and indeed all of the Baja and Sea of Cortez. Specifically in Loreto, the nearby island of Isla Carmen is famous for its diving. There is an abundance of fish and breathtaking underwater scenery. The water gets in the mid 80's farenheight during the summer months and the underwater visibility is 50 to 100 feet. See the page on Diving and Snorkeling in Loreto.
