Dining in Loreto Baja California Sur, Mexico

Restaurant on the beach in Baja Loreto
Restaurant on the malecon in Loreto

There are some very good dining restaurants in Loreto, Baja Mexico.  I don't think that you coud say that any of them serve haute cuisine gourmet food. Just really good food, and that's good enough for me anytime.  If you want really great gourmet food, I recommend Paris, France. I am not being facetious.  I love the food in France, from the simple baguette sandwiches to the pastries to the haute cuisine served in most of the restaurants on the Champs Elysee and in the Latin Quarter opposite the Notre Dame Cathedral or in the neighborhood of Monte Martre.

But France is not Mexico, Paris is not Loreto.  The parissienes are rude to foreigners and to their own countrymen that are not from Paris. In Loreto, all of the restaurants have a great atmosphere for dining and the food is reliably and consistantly good. Loretoans are not rude. No problem getting really good real Mexican food, steaks, or seafood either.  The prices are pretty reasonable.  There are a couple of good small outdoor restaurants by the Mission that serve an excellent breakfast and lunch.  There is a palapa covered restaurant about a block from the beach on Miguel Hidalgo that serves mesquite wood barbecued seafood, chicken and beef, every day. The barbecue grill is right on the street in front of the restaurant.  It is fun just to stop and watch them cook. Sometimes I dream about that place.

On the malecon (boardwalk on the beach), there are several really good restaurants for some real quality Mexican dining.  One of them, the "Mediterraneo", was opened just a couple of years ago and is owned and operated by an American couple (you get American efficiency there).  It is the newest and nicest restaurant on the malecon.  They tout Texas barbecue, but actually they serve quite a variety: barbecue, seafood, and traditional Mexican food.  Their food approaches haute cuisine.  It has a great view of the beach as the main dining room is upstairs in an open and beautifully decorated outside patio covered dining area with nice green umbrellas over each table. It is well run and their food is very good. A little pricey, but worth it.

There is another excellent Mexican restaurant near the entrance to the town and right next to the Hacienda Hotel on the main drag, Calle Salvatierra.  They have a nice little cantina and a nice dining room.  That restaurant has been there a long time.  They serve the best baked clams on the half shell topped with butter and parmesan cheese. To kill for. They serve traditional Mexican food as well as a great assortment of steak dinners (huge Porterhouse steaks).  Good service, reasonable prices, and very good food.  For my last dinner in Baja Loreto Mexico before I head back to the states, I always go there and order the baked clams followed by a giant Porterhouse steak dinner and a Cadillac Margarita made with Jose Cuervo 1800. Yeah, man. I define really living as relaxing in a beautiful Baja beach town, eating, and fishing.  Top
