What's new in the Baja Beach City of Loreto?

Frequent visitors and vacationers are marveling at the improvements that are taking place all over the town, just within the last year and a half. The main streets, Hidalgo and Duarte, have been repaved and signal lights are just making their debut. New hotels and refurbishing of older hotels are underway. New restaurants are popping up in key locations. A new big supermarket is scheduled to break ground this year in a new shopping center very close to the lots that I am offering for sale in this website. Just this year, Loreto got a new hospital. For years there was only one bank branch office, Bancomer, located next to the mission in town. Just within the past year, several new Bancomer branches have opened up and a new bank, Banamex, has also opened for business this year. Did I mention that living here is very, very economical: low, low property taxes and cheap utilities everywhere in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Top
New Hospital For Baja Loreto

Just this year, Loreto completed a brand new hospital just a quarter of a mile from my lots. Complete with an emergency room, the new facility is beautiful and is just what this beach city community has been needing for many years. This, together with more medical professionals moving into the community, has elevated Loreto to a new level of security and accomodation for the residents and visitors alike. The hospital is what many were waiting for as a green light for retiring in Loreto, the most peaceful of all the beach cities in Baja California Sur Mexico. Top
Sanctuary-like Atmosphere

Something that just seems to permiate the warm balmy air of Baja Loreto is the very perceptable ambience of fun living and serenity. This is very different from the known touristy and very commercial coastal beach cities such as Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and Cancun...not so much fun. A vacation or retirement spot should be all about relaxing and having fun. In Baja Loreto, you can walk through the town and there is no one yelling at you to come into their restaurant or to buy timeshares or to take this tour or that tour. None of that here. I will tell you, that is extremely unusual for all of Mexico. It has to do with the culture of this very old Baja Mexico beach town. The residents here are conservative in behavior, meaning that the towns people practice an old fashioned type of good humor and mutual respect for each other and to visitors. While there are great restaurants and cantinas, there are no loud night clubs in town blasting loud music and harboring boisterous young people pounding down beers like the world is about to end. Not here, not in Baja Loreto. And I will tell you, that is unusual for Baja Mexico. Living can be easy.
I have been coming to Baja Loreto since 1986. In 1999, I took a month off of work and traveled to all the coastal towns in the Baja and on the mainland of Mexico searching for a city or town in which to buy a vacation home or perhaps later, for retiring. After the trip, the best spot for a fun vacation and a retirement home that was not your typical tourist trap, all things considered, was right here in Loreto all along. Economical, friendly, safe, perfect weather, clean air, conservative and friendly people, beautiful and serene, the historic mission in downtown Loreto, a magnificent island of Isla Carmen, the greatest fishing and diving ever, excellent food (I love the chocolate clams), only two miles from the airport and drivable from San Diego. Now, with the hospital and the new marina, what more can any human being ask for in a beautiful beach town Baja Mexico in which to vacation or retire? Did I mention great fishing?
I don't know, maybe it's the sunshine 360 days a year or the calm Sea of Cortez with the lack of waves but just a gentle visible ripple from the warm balmy breeze that feels like the warm breath of baby on your forearms. Top
It's Beautiful Here

Perhaps the most striking thing about the beauty of Loreto is the fact that the city is surrounded by the beautiful low ranging La Giganta mountains and bounded by the Island of Isla Carmen just six miles off its beaches. It's the ideal vacation or retirement spot. You can see something majestic in every direction. That is unusual for any location anywhere. The island is elongate and parallels the coast. Since Loreto is on the east side of the baja peninsula, the sun rises from behind the island. I tell you, that is a site to see...every morning. Then there is the sunset behind the La Giganta mountains. Also, when there is a full moon at night, the majical cast of moonlight on the serene waters of the Sea of Cortez is absolutely mesmerizing. Life in Loreto is all about enjoying the peaceful serenity, having fun during the day and relaxing at night.
The La Giganta mountains, the island of Isla Carment, the town itself with the Mission in the middle all contribute the visual experience. At night you can see the top of the Mission bell tower. Its sticks out like the impressive landmark that it is, reminding you that Loreto is not just any Baja Mexico town, but an historic location. The mission was built in 1697 and was the first Spanish mission established in either California USA or the Baja. In fact, Loreto was the first capital of the enire Baja, before the city of La Paz became the capital. The mission has been restored and is a fully functioning church and museum, with Sunday services and daily tours offered to the public. Top
The Best Fishing & Diving in Baja California Sur, Mexico

Let's talk about having fun. The most common type of fishing is off-shore ocean fishing from uncovered, open 22 foot outboard boats called a "pangas". It has a center console and typically gets up to 30 mph powered by anything from a 55 horsepower motor to 125 horsepower. I have been fishing Loreto since 1986. Before the marina was built, all the boats were launched from the beach...at six in the morning. Having the new marina has just made having fun even easier. Bring your own boat, the marina has a great boat launch ramp.
I will tell you from personal experience that the fishing in Baja Loreto is absolutely fantastic! I have fished many places: All of California coast from Northern California to San Diego, all of the Baja from Ensenada, San Quintin, Mulege, La Paz, to Cabo San Lucas, and the main land of Mexico, Guaymas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Acapulco. The best fun that I have had fishing in my twenty-two years of compulsive obsessive fanatic fishing is right here in Loreto, all things considered. In fact, I have limited my fishing in the last ten years exclusively to Baja Loreto and the Sea of Cortez. It's cheaper than the other places, the fishings grounds start a half mile off the beach, bait is easier to get, skippers and boats are always available to rent (the rental comes with a skipper who really knows his stuff), the marina has made boat launching mere child's play, and there is excellent fishing all year round: Dorado (Mahi Mahi), sail fish, marlin, giant grouper, yellow tail, shark (if you are into that sort of thing), wahoo, cabrilla, and much more. Have you ever gotten into a school of squid? It's a real kick! Whether living in the oasis of Baja Loreto or just on vacation or you are thinking about retiring, well, life just doesn't get any better.

Then there is diving. Actually, Loreto is considered just as much a haven for diving as it is for fishing. With plentiful fish, the diving off the island of Isla Carmen is fantastic. Actually, there are just as many divers in Loreto as there are fishermen. Top
