Compare Loreto and La Paz

Loreto is very quant when you compare Loreto and La Paz. Loreto is a calm, quiet, serene town.  Very different from any other place in the Baja.  It is about 1/15 the size of La Paz, population wise.  It is not nearly as built up, spread out, or metropolitan as La Paz.   The town of Loreto is much, much smaller geographically than La Paz.  Loreto doesn't have a university, nor a movie theater, nor are there any shopping centers...yet. La Paz has all those things. The first shopping center n Loreto is slated to break ground this year very close to the lots offered for sale by Baja-Lots in this website, see the HOME page..  Also, Loreto is only 700 miles south of the San Diego border whereas La Paz is over 900 miles south of the border.  This makes Loreto a much more practical drive from the US border than La Paz.

There is alot available in La Paz that doesn't exist in Loreto

La Paz is very metropolitan when you compare La Paz and Loreto. La Paz has several Universities, several large hospitals, and many large shopping centers.  One shopping center in particular, called Soriana, has a multiplex cinema theatre that rivals that of the Spectrum in Irvine, Orange County, California.  There are many chain stores of very large super markets. They have fast food restaurants of their own, including several American franchises (e.g., MacDonald's, Burger King). La Paz has a night life in town and the down town main drag that follows the boardwalk becomes a giant street carnival during certain festive times of the year. You would think that you were in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

La Paz Vs Loreto. in terms of services, there are many more law firms and accountancy firms in La Paz. In Loreto, there is one accountant and a couple of attorneys.  They are a bit complacent as the residents of Loreto would have to go to La Paz for alternate choices...and the accountant and the Loreto attornies know that. You can even get sushi in La Paz. Also, La Paz has new car dealerships, lots of great hardware stores, lumber and building material yards. There are many different banks, much greater selection of large restauants, a city play house, and all the federal and state government offices.  In order to close a real estate purchase and sale transaction for Loreto real estate, one must go to La Paz for filings of government papers.  La Paz simply has more of everything in multiples of 10 or 20. For those of you who are interested, Cabo is only 123 miles to the south, whereas Cabo is over 300 miles away from Loreto.  Also, there is a Home Depot in Cabo and 123 miles one way is a doable one-day round trip drive.

The "Malecon" Boardwalk in La Paz

Loreto Vs La Paz. Loreto is naturally very quaint and kinder and gentler than La Paz, maybe because of its smaller size, its history, the mission, and the fact that Loreto is surrounded by mountains on three sides and on the fourth side by the ocean and the most beautiful island in the Baja, the island of Isla Carmen.  Loreto simply has a different "cozy and welcomingl" feel to it.  It is definitely a "walkabout" town. You can walkabout La Paz, but you have to drive to town first, then drive back home. The local residents have been here for generations. They could go other places, but everyone that is here is here because they deliberately prefer to be here.

You may compare La Paz and Loreto in terms of the lack of rank commercialism. You definitely do not get that "touristy" atmosphere like you do in Cabo. Unlike Cabo, Mazatlan, Tijuana, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco, you will not be yelled at in either La Paz or Loreto by curb side restaurant workers demanding that you go into their restaurant, nor will you be approached on the street to buy time shares. However, if you want to relax and truly get away from it all and feel like you "belong" here in this traditional Mexican environment, compare Loreto to La Paz and you will decide that Loreto is the town for you. On the other hand, if you want more available goods and services and some night life places to go to, and to get a little more of that metropolitan atmosphere, then La Paz is the place for you.   Top
